Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru (FUAZ) branch, has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the university’s Governing Council and management, warning that its members may embark on an industrial action if their demands are not met within the stipulated period.
The decision was reached during the union’s congress held at the university auditorium on July 28, 2026.
In a statement signed by the branch chairman, Comrade Danbuachi Ishaq Sanchi, the union expressed dissatisfaction over what it described as the non-implementation of the Federal Government/ASUU 2025 agreement at FUAZ, despite similar agreements being implemented in other federal universities.
Among the issues raised by the union are the non-implementation of the 40 per cent upward review of academic staff emoluments, the payment of five months’ accumulated Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) arrears, and other outstanding financial entitlements owed to members.
“The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the implementation of the agreement and issued the necessary circular directing compliance,” the statement said.
According to Comrade Sanchi, the Federal Government subsequently released funds to federal universities for the payment of five months accumulated Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) arrears.
He, however, lamented that members of ASUU at FUAZ were excluded from the payments despite being entitled to the benefits.
“FUAZ ASUU discovered with utter dismay that they were denied this benefits which they are legitimately entitled to despite FUAZ being the only federal University established in Nigeria and made operational without any take off grant.”
The union further noted that despite operating without a take-off grant, its members had continued to carry out their academic responsibilities with dedication while hoping the outstanding issues would be resolved.
“But despite these challenges, members of ASUU-FUAZ have continued to discharge their academic responsibilities with dedication, professionalism and patience in hope that the situation would be resolved.”
Having exhausted what it described as all reasonable avenues for dialogue, the congress resolved to issue a 21-day ultimatum, effective from July 29, 2026, to the university management and Governing Council.
The union warned that failure to address its demands before the expiration of the notice would leave it with no option but to commence a strike.
“We therefore demand immediate implementation of the FGN-ASUU 2025 Agreement in its entirety at the Federal University of Agriculture Zuru. And immediate payment of the 5 months accumulated CATA arrears and all other outstanding financial entitlements due to members.”
The congress was attended by members of the ASUU National Visiting Team, including Comrade Lawal Argungu, Murtala Abdullahi (Kwara), Aliyu Ahmed, as well as the ASUU Sokoto Zone Coordinator, Professor Abubakar Sabo.
