National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Taraba State chapter, has announced the disbursement of more than N250 million to the families of deceased members and retirees as part of its welfare support programme.
State President of the union, Bajison Wakili Danjuma, disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing journalists in Jalingo.
He explained that the payments were made to assist bereaved families and retired workers who had served in the local government system.
Danjuma said the union had prioritised welfare under his leadership, stressing that financial assistance to families of late members had become a regular commitment.
“Since I came on board, I have made it a point of duty that every month, the Union disbursed funds to the families of our diseased members and retirees.
We usually get the details of our deceased members through Chairmen of our various local government areas,” he said.
The NULGE leader also highlighted several projects undertaken by the union to strengthen its financial base and improve services for members. According to him, the union recently acquired a brand-new Hilux vehicle and a Toyota Hummer bus.
He further revealed that the union completed a three-star hotel and event centre aimed at generating sustainable income for members and supporting the union’s welfare programmes.
Danjuma attributed improved working conditions for local government employees in the state to the policies of Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, noting that salary adjustments and the implementation of a new minimum wage had significantly boosted workers’ morale.
“Local Government workers in Taraba state are one of the most paid employees in Nigeria, we all know that since the governor came on board, he has increased our minimum wage twice.
This increment has greatly improved the living conditions of our workers at the grassroot who in past find it difficult to pay their children’s school fees,” he added.
He said the union’s leadership and members had therefore resolved to support the governor’s re-election ambition.
“With what he has done, we have unanimously threw our weight behind his second term bid come next year,” he noted.
While commending the governor’s efforts, Danjuma appealed to the state government to address outstanding salary arrears owed to local government workers by the previous administration.
He specifically urged the government to clear the five months of unpaid salaries inherited from past leadership, saying doing so would further strengthen the welfare of workers across the state.
