Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported that a thunderstorm on September 3 severed the 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven transmission line, causing significant damage.
TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.
Mrs. Mbah said “The cut conductor fell near Tower 97, triggering a fire that destroyed a nearby house and a car parked under the line, while also killing two cows.”
In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, Mbah confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident.
She noted that TCN’s Enugu Regional Manager, Mr. Tom Inugonum, led a team to inspect the site, and “a Quick Response Line Maintenance Team has begun dismantling the damaged section to restring a new conductor.”
Despite the disruption, Mbah assured that power supply to the Nsukka area remains unaffected, stating, “TCN has rerouted supply through the Otukpo 132kV Transmission Substation to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company for distribution.”
Mbah emphasized the dangers of encroaching on transmission line areas, warning, “Building, parking, or conducting activities within the Right of Way of transmission lines is extremely hazardous and poses serious risks to lives and property.”
She urged the public to adhere to safety guidelines around power infrastructure, adding, “TCN remains committed to ensuring a stable national grid and prioritizing public safety.”
