A routine attempt to restrain a mentally unstable teenager in Akure turned fatal on Thursday when an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was stabbed to death.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the heartbreaking incident, which occurred at Oke-Ala in Oba-Ile, Akure North Local Government Area.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the command’s spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, said the officer died in the hospital from injuries sustained during the struggle.
“Yes, it is true that the civil defense personnel died while receiving treatment at the hospital,” Ayanlade stated, describing the event as deeply unfortunate.
According to eyewitnesses, the chaos began after the boy’s mother sought help from two NSCDC operatives to restrain her son, who had reportedly battled mental instability for years. What was intended as an intervention quickly spiraled out of control.
“Actually, when the boy started misbehaving this morning, his mother invited two civil defence officers to help her chain him,” one eyewitness recounted. “Meanwhile, in the process, he overpowered the civil defence personnel and removed knife from the man and stabbed him. But it was unfortunate that the NSCDC man died despite having a gun when the incident happened.”
Confirming the development, DSC Daniel Aidamenbor, Head of the NSCDC Public Relations Office in Ondo State, explained that the fallen officer was only trying to restrain the boy so he could be taken to the hospital for treatment when the attack occurred.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock, raising renewed concerns about mental health support and emergency response safety in vulnerable situations.
