An accident scene
No fewer than 10 people have lost their lives in a fatal road accident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday along the Jos–Bauchi road in Plateau State.
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Jos by the Plateau State Command Public Education Officer, Mr Peter Longsan. According to him, the crash happened at about 12:12 a.m., shortly after a military checkpoint on the busy highway.
“In the early hours of today, we received a distress call following a road traffic crash along the Jos–Bauchi road,” Longsan said.
He explained that the accident involved four vehicles—two articulated trucks and two minibuses—with a total of 19 occupants.
“The crash involved four vehicles, two trailers and two minibuses, with 19 people involved, including 17 males and two females,” he stated.
Longsan disclosed that 10 of the victims, all males, died instantly, while those who sustained injuries were rushed to the Jos University Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.
“Ten men died on the spot, while the injured victims are currently receiving treatment,” he added.
Preliminary findings by the FRSC point to excessive speed and reckless driving as the likely causes of the crash, though investigations are still ongoing.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that speed and reckless driving caused the crash, while further investigation is ongoing,” Longsan said.
He used the opportunity to caution motorists to exercise restraint on the roads, especially during the Yuletide season, urging them to obey traffic rules and drive responsibly to avoid needless loss of lives.
