U.S. President Donald Trump is making headlines with his demand for the immediate removal of homeless people from Washington, D.C.
On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump posted, “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY,” alongside photos of tents and litter along roadsides.
Trump stated, “We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital.” He drew a stark distinction between homeless individuals and criminals, saying, “The Criminals, you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong.”
A press conference is scheduled for Monday where Trump will address crime and cleanliness in the U.S. capital. Trump aims to make Washington “safer and more beautiful than it ever was before”.
Washington, D.C. operates under a unique governance structure with both local and federal oversight. Trump, a Republican, has frequently criticized the city’s Democratic mayor, Muriel Bowser.
According to U.S. media reports, the federal government is considering deploying hundreds of National Guard members to implement Trump’s goals in D.C. However, no final decision has been made.
This isn’t Trump’s first move on this issue. Two weeks ago, he announced plans to act against homeless people near the White House, saying, “I think it’s terrible, and we’ll have them removed immediately”.
