U.S President, Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on countries aligning themselves with the “anti-American policies” of the BRICS group of developing nations.
The warning came as leaders of the BRICS group gathered in Brazil for their annual summit.
“Any Country aligning itself with the anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10 per cent Tariff.
“There will be no exceptions to this policy,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
However, he didn’t clarify what he meant by “anti-American policies.”
The BRICS group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, among others, responded by warning that rising tariffs threaten global trade.
“The rise in tariffs threatened global trade,” the group said in a joint statement, veiledly criticizing Trump’s tariff policies.
The summit, attended by leaders such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, discussed various global issues, including: reforming global institutions, climate change, Artificial Intelligence and trade disputes.
Indonesia’s senior economic minister, Airlangga Hartarto, is scheduled to meet with US officials on Monday to discuss tariff talks.
Trump’s administration aims to finalize dozens of trade deals before the July 9 deadline for imposing significant “retaliatory tariffs.”
As the BRICS group continues to expand, with 30 nations expressing interest in participating, Trump’s tariff threat may test the group’s unity and commitment to multilateral diplomacy ¹.
