FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed no regrets over naming the Abuja International Conference Centre after President Bola Tinubu.
Despite criticism from some quarters, Wike defended his decision, citing examples of other national landmarks named after notable figures.
“I have done it, and I have no regret at all,” Wike said, adding that everything in the centre was renovated, except for the structure.

He questioned the logic behind criticising the naming of the conference centre, given that other national landmarks like Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and Moshood Abiola National Stadium were not built by the individuals they were named after.
Wike expressed disappointment that some people were focusing on criticising the N39 billion spent on the renovation, rather than appreciating the effort.
“They said that the centre was built with N240 million, but which year? 1991. What was the exchange rate in 1991 compared with today?” he asked, highlighting the impact of inflation and changing exchange rates.
The minister emphasised that Nigeria, as the giant of Africa, deserves the best infrastructure.
“Nobody who loves this country will criticise the rehabilitation of the international conference centre,” he said, adding that the renovated centre reflects the country’s status as a leader in Africa.
“We deserve the best for the country, and Mr. President has given us the best,” Wike concluded.
