Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Yobe State University has commenced an indefinite strike action over the government’s failure to meet their demands.
The union’s chairman, Dr. Ahmed Karage, announced the strike at a news conference in Damaturu on Friday, citing the government’s prolonged neglect of their demands.
According to Dr. Karage, the demands include implementation of consequential adjustments arising from the 2024 and 2019 minimum wage, appropriate promotion placements, payment of promotion arrears from 2018 to 2024, and payment of 35% and 25% salary award consequential adjustments from January 2023 to date.
The union is also demanding payment of postgraduate facilitation allowances for staff and granting of autonomy to Yobe State University.
The strike, which began today, has resulted in the suspension of academic activities at the university.
Dr. Karage expressed disappointment that despite prolonged patience and several reminders, the government has failed to meet their demands, leading to a loss of morale among academic staff.
“The situation has now become untenable, leading to loss of morale among academic staff, severely impacting their ability to function effectively,” Dr. Karage said.
The union regrets the disruption the strike may cause to students and their families, and is soliciting their understanding and solidarity during this period.
Dr. Karage emphasized that the strike will continue until the government fulfills its responsibilities and meets the union’s demands.
The situation is expected to have a significant impact on the academic calendar of the university, with students and parents likely to bear the brunt of the prolonged strike.
