Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Yobe State University has confirmed that its ongoing strike, which began on July 11, will persist until the state government addresses its demands.
Chairman of the ASUU Yobe State University chapter, Dr. Ahmed Karage, stated this in a statement on Monday.
He said while the state government implemented the consequential adjustment for the N70,000 minimum wage in July, several key issues remain unresolved.
The union’s unmet demands include implementing academic staff promotions approved by the university council and paying promotion arrears from 2018 to 2025.
Additionally, they seek payment of minimum wage consequential adjustment arrears from 2019 to 2024 and a 35-25% salary award for professors and other ranks from 2023 to 2025. The union is also pushing for payment of N70,000 minimum wage arrears from January 2024 to June 2025.
Dr. Karage expressed appreciation for the partial implementation of the minimum wage but emphasized that the strike will only be called off after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the union and the state government. This MoU would presumably outline a clear path to resolving the outstanding issues.
The strike has led to a standstill in academic activities at the university, with students and staff awaiting a resolution.
The union urged the public to be patient, promising that the strike will end once their demands are met through a signed MoU.
The ASUU YSU chapter remains committed to its demands, believing that the benefits of resolving these issues will outweigh the short-term disruptions caused by the strike.
