Zulum receives 106 Borno students evacuated from Sudan

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum has called on the United Nations and the international communities to intervene in the ongoing conflicts in Sudan.

The Governor made the call on Monday when he received Borno State students and indigenes living in Sudan that were evacuated from the country when they paid a courtesy call on the Governor at the Government House Maiduguri.

Governor Zulum who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Usman Jidda Shuwa while receiving them at the Multi Purpose Hall of the Government House, Maiduguri on behalf of the Governor said ,” I welcome you back home and sympathise with you over the hardship and pain you went through,. We have to evacuate you because we don’t want your safety to be jeopardized “.

Earlier, the Borno State Commissioner for Higher Education, Science Technology and Innovation, Hon Babagana Mustapha Mallumbe said a total of 106 Borno indigenes were safely evacuated from Sudan, among whom included – 56 students but only 14 of the students were sponsored by the Borno State government “

“While others were sponsored by their respective parents and the remaining 50 evacuees in Sudan on personal or business ground or trips”.

“Immediately we received the sad news of the crisis, Governor Zulum set up a committee and directed the committee to ensure the safe return of our students and Indigenes.

“We immediately liaise with our consultants in Sudan who mobilised our students and other state indigenes in Khartoum to Aswan town an Egyptian border and from there Nigerian Ambassador facilitated their access to Egypt.

“From there , the Federal government evacutaed them from Egypt to Abuja by flight where we (Borno state government) charted plane to convey them from Abuja to Maiduguri “, Malumbe said.

Also, the Executive Secretary of the Borno State Scholarship Board, Alhaji Bala Isa said among the evacuatees , only 14 of them were on the sponsorship of the Borno state government.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the President Kaneem students Association in Sudan, Muhammed Digoal said they passed through untold hardship without money and food but thanked God for the intervention of Governor Zulum through a consultant who evacuated them from Khartoum to Egypt.
