Again, boat mishap claims 4 lives in Nasarawa

Barely four months after a mishap that claimed 12 lives, another boat accident has claimed the lives of four persons from Ubbe community in Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The ugly incident occurred on Monday, at river in Hunki community of Awe Local Government Area of the State.

This is happening barely four months after a similar boat mishap claimed the lives of 12 persons at a river, Kogi Kungra Kamfani, in Arikiya, Lafia LGA of the state. In the previous incident,19 people were on board, 12 died and seven were rescued.

Our correspondent gathered that the four victims of the Monday mishap, visited the area to assist their brother in the harvest of rice when the unfortunate incident occurred while crossing the river.

A brother of the deceased and youth leader, Comrade JD Congo, who confirmed the tragedy on Wednesday appealed to the government to put in place measures to avoid future reoccurrence.

“I want to call on the Nasarawa State Government and the Director-General of the state Emergency Management Agency, to take drastic measures as you’re all aware of the water that was said would be released from the Lagdo dam in Cameroon.

“However, Government must priotize humanity over any interest as an entity. I therefore appeal to the Government to intensify efforts on the provision of modern boats and life jackets and water taskforce should be locally-sourced” he said.

The victims include a graduate of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), Shedrack Dauda, who bagged a 2nd upper class degree.

Others are Akolo Moses, Meshach Dauda, and a 39-year-old Alkali Congo(Alaye) who is a graduate of the College of Education(COE), Akwanga.
