The Iraqi judiciary on Monday issued the death penalty against the killer of a reporter and cameraman in 2020 in Iraq’s southern city of Basra.

A statement by the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council said that the Basra Criminal Court issued the death penalty after the convict confessed to killing the reporter Ahmed Abdul Samad, and the cameraman Safaa Ghali.

In January 2020, unknown gunmen shot dead Abdul Samad and Ghali, who both worked for the Dijlah TV, inside their car while they were leaving the protest site in Basra province.

Mass anti-government demonstrations have been launched in capital Baghdad and other cities in central and southern Iraq since October 2019, demanding comprehensive reform, fight against corruption, better public services, and more job opportunities.
