The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos on Friday unveiled a week-long programme to celebrate the 25th episcopal and 40th priestly ordination anniversary of its Archbishop, Most Rev. Adewale Martins.

Rev. Fr Anthony Godono, the church’s Director of Communications, in a statement explained that the purpose of the event was to thank God for Martins’ life and service to humanity.

According to him, the events, which have been lined-up for the celebration, included a Holy Mass at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos on Sept. 16.

“The Mass will be a double celebration for the Archbishop because, apart from marking the 25th anniversary of the Episcopacy, it will also be his 40th priestly ordination anniversary.

“The High Priest will be celebrating with Very Rev. Msgr. Edmond Babashay-Akpala; Very Rev. Msgr. Jerome Gbenga-Odunkan; Very Rev. Fr. Michael Femi-Akintolu; and Very Rev. Alphonsus Iweanya-Ania.

“These celebrants were classmates with Adewale Martins at Saints Peter and Paul Major Seminary, Bodija, Ibadan.

“They were ordained on the same day, Sept. 18, 1983 at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos, hence, their famous name, “The class of 83.”

Godono said that the activities would commence on Sept. 15, with a musical concert at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Victoria Island, Lagos.

According to him, there will also be a quiz competition among parishes across the Archdiocese, which will border on the knowledge of scripture.

The director said that there would be visits to some charity homes to encourage the needy.

He said that there would also be award presentations to the clergy, religious and Lay faithful of the Archdiocese in recognition of their selfless services to the church and humanity.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Martins was installed as Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Lagos on Aug. 4, 2012 following the resignation of his predecessor, Anthony Cardinal Okojie.(NAN)
