Nasarawa State University launches 3 books on how to tackle insecurity in Nigeria

The Nasarawa State University, Keffi through the untiring efforts of the university”s Polish Academic Linkages has launched three books written by a Polish scholar, Brunon Holyst.

The lunching which took place at the Ladi Kwali hall of Sheraton Hotels Abuja was graced by the governor’s of Kogi and Nasarawa states respectively. The successful launch of the books was attributed to the untiring efforts of the Director of NSUK-Polish Academic Linkages Dr. K. Tso Nghargbu who facilitated the launch and hosting of the successful event.

In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University Keffi, Professor Suleiman Bala Muhammed told the guests that the unveiling of the books became necessary as it provides solutions to the rising cases of insecurity in the country.

Professor Muhammed said the university as a research institution, deemed it necessary to collaborate with the Polish author and the Polish Ambassador to Nigeria, Her Excellency Joanna Tarnawska to find lasting solutions to the lingering insecurity by lunching the books to generate knowledge.

He commended the Nasarawa State Governor, Abdulahi Sule for his genuine interest in reshaping educational institutions especially Nasarawa State University and urged all to pick copies of the books to encourage the author and the university community.

In his speech, the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, who was the chairman of the occasion and represented by his deputy, Chief Edward Onoja, expressed happiness for attending the event as the title of the three books reflects what they were doing in fighting insecurity in Kogi state.

The governor stated that the study of criminology and suicidology are apt as it find solutions to the protracted Boko Haram and banditry in the country.

In their separate good will messages, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Brigadial General. Ibrahim Shuaibu (rtd), the Minister of the FCT, Abuja, Dr. Tijani Aliyu, the DG of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NYSC) Dr. Ahmed Audi both extolled the pragmatic leadership qualities of the Vice Chancellor for putting the young university on the sound path of development.

In his remarks, a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Jemibewon rtd. expressed satisfaction with the cordial relationship existing between Nasarawa State University, Keffi and the Republic of Poland and called for more synergy in the areas of tackling insecurity in Nigeria.

The reviewer of the three books, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, who is the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja, decried the alarming cases of suicide in the country, saying that Nigeria ranked highest with over 800,000 cases in Africa and 6th in the whole world.

The book reviewer poured encomiums on the octogenarian, Dr.Brunon Holyst for creating a sound legacy for the younger generation through his books. He enjoined staff and students benefiting from the Polish scholarship to focus more on peace building and security studies.

Also speaking, the Polish Ambassador to Nigeria, Joanna Tarnawska, said she and her country are deeply honoured by the generosity and love shown to them by the university and Nigeria at large, and expressed hope that the relationship between the two countries will continue to yield more positive results especially in finding lasting solutions to security challenges in Nigeria.

In his vote of thanks, the Director, NSUK-Polish Academic Linkages, Dr. K’tso Nghargbu who was overwhelmed with the caliber of people that graced the unveiling of the books thanked the Vice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi for the opportunity given to him and also commended the robust relationship between the university and the Polish government. He thanked all who graced the occasion and prayed for journey mercies for everybody.

Highlights of the event was a grand performance by the students of the Cultural Arts Department of Nasarawa State University.
