Scores killed as gunmen open fire on mourners during wake-keep in Benue

Gunmen have reportedly attacked Mbayatyo Mbater council ward of Logo Local Government Area of Benue State during a wake-keep, killing an unspecified number of mourners.

It was learnt that the incident which occurred Saturday morning, at the wake-keep of one Mama Sule Achin Adigi, left many dead while scores sustained various degrees of injuries.

A resident of the community, Mr Jiji Jack confirmed the development in a post on his official Facebook page.

He called on security agencies to urgently rescue “those that are still breathing”.

According to Daily Post report, a popular commander of community volunteer guards in the area, identified as Mr Atum, was among those gunned down by the assailants who are yet-to-be-identified.

Meanwhile, the state’s police spokesperson, DSP Catherine Anene Sewuese is yet to confirm the sad incident. She said: “we have not received that report yet”.

Recalled that Sankera axis of the state, which comprises the Logo Local government, has been engulfed in killings from the deadly militia gang of the late Terwase Akwaza a.k.a Gana who was allegedly killed by the Nigerian military after he surrendered last year.

His loyalists had vowed to revenge the killing of the most wanted terrorists who had killed several residents of the state.
