Senator Diket Plang of Plateau Central is on a mission to strengthen the influence of traditional rulers in governance, recognizing their crucial role in maintaining societal harmony and addressing pressing issues.
This initiative was highlighted during his recent visit to the king’s palace in Jos where he met with the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Gyang Buba. Accompanied by prominent traditional leaders including the Ngolong Ngas, HRH Nde Jika Golit, and the Emir of Kanam, HRH Alh. Mohammadu Mu’azu, Sen. Plang stressed the importance of traditional councils in Plateau State’s culture and governance.
During the visit, Sen. Plang expressed gratitude for the support of traditional rulers, attributing his election victory to their blessings and guidance. He emphasized the need for elected officials to work closely with traditional leaders to understand and address the needs of the people.
He stated “The traditional rulers are custodians of our culture, norms, and daily affairs,so as elected representatives, it is imperative that we work hand in hand with them to ensure the welfare and security of our communities”.
He also advocated for constitutional amendments to formalize the role of traditional rulers in governance structures, granting them greater authority to address issues like insecurity and socio-economic development.
“We need to acknowledge the pivotal role traditional rulers play in our society. By enshrining their authority in the constitution, we can empower them to tackle challenges at the grassroots level and contribute meaningfully to national development.” He emphasized
In response, HRH Gyang Buba praised Senator Plang’s advocacy and commitment to strengthening the partnership between elected officials and traditional rulers. He highlighted the importance of collaboration in overcoming challenges in Plateau State and pledged the support of traditional rulers in advancing the welfare of the people.
Senator Plang’s push for greater recognition of traditional rulers signals a positive step towards inclusive governance and grassroots empowerment in Plateau State.
