Zone your presidential ticket to South-East – Group urges political parties

A Non Governmental Organization (NGO), The Concerned Igbo Stakeholders Forum (CISF), has urged political parties to consider zoning their presidential tickets to the South-East, for fairness and equity to prevail.

The forum noted that the South-East was blessed with competent and qualified candidates who can unite the country and lead it to greater prosperity from 2023 upwards.

The Convener of the group, Mr Chukwuma Okenwa, said this at a news conference held on Friday in Enugu.

Okenwa said that in the “spirit of one Nigeria” and “sense of belonging”, the issue of the president of the country from the South-East should be a non-negotiable agenda in 2023.

According to him, the people of the South-East should be supported and allowed to produce Nigeria’s President in 2023, as the zone has supported other zones in the country before now.

“The people of the South-East have been largely marginalised and this has led to the agitations and crises in the region. A president from South-East extraction will restore peace and stability to the region.

“South-East should be given the opportunity in 2023.

“The people who are endorsing the candidature of candidates who are not of South-East extraction are deliberately planning to plunge the country into unnecessary and avoidable crisis and this must be discouraged,” he advised.

Okenwa urged President Muhammadu Buhari to explore a political solution in ending the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“The continued incarceration of the leader of the proscribed IPOB is having a big toll on the economy and stability of the South-East, especially with the continued observation of the sit-at-home order of IPOB and other security threats attributed to those who are sympathetic to the incarcerated leader.
