FRSC official at the scene of an accident
Three people have been confirmed dead following a late-night collision on the Gombe–Yola Road, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Gombe State said on Wednesday.
Sector Commander Samson Kaura, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), explained that the tragic crash occurred around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, just before the Kashere junction in Akko Local Government Area.
The accident involved two vehicles and was severe enough to claim three lives on the spot.
According to Kaura, six other occupants sustained various degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Specialist Hospital, Gombe.
The commander traced the crash to wrongful overtaking, which he said led to a head-on collision.
He warned that the combination of speed and night driving often increases the chances of misjudgment on the road.
“We always advise against night driving, speed, wrongful overtaking, among others,” Kaura said.
“Though it is the right of anyone to drive at night, but if it is not necessary, kindly avoid it. The cars involved in this crash were on speed even when they were driving at night.”
He stressed the need for drivers to exercise greater caution when visibility is reduced. “At night, we must drive with extra caution and maintain reasonable speed because the car you think is far off may just be closer than you think,” he added.
Kaura urged motorists to prioritise safety over haste, emphasising that responsible driving saves lives—not just their own, but those of other road users as well.
