Tragedy struck on Sunday evening as three trucks reportedly lost control and rammed into a crowd during the Ame Wo Ba Eggon (AWBE) carnival procession in Nasarawa Eggon town, the headquarter of Nasarawa Eggon Local Government of Nasarawa State, claiming lives and injuring several participants.
The accident occurred near the Eggon Community Secondary School, venue of the carnival, with four persons confirmed dead instantly at the scene of carnival.
According to an eyewitnesses, three trucks lost control and plowed into the carnival procession, leaving devastation in their wake with four death and many injured.
Another eyewitness said several participants were seriously injured, including Martins Akwashiki, from Nasarawa Eggon Zone and an elderly man from Abuja zone who suffered a broken legs, as they were taking to Abuja, for treatment.
The Chairman of the carnival Planning committee, Barr. Alaku Dennis, was among those injured and he is receiving treatment at Nasarawa Eggon General Hospital.
National PRO of AWBE, Chief Gale Esson John, described the incident as devastating, saying “accidents like this are always devastating, especially when they occur during celebrations. Our thoughts are with the affected families and friends”.
Due to incident, the leadership of AWBE announced the immediate cancellation of the 2025 carnival in response to the tragedy.
Executive Chairman of Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Council, Barr. Iliya Ibn Aliyu, who rushed to the scene of the tragic tragedy condoled Eggon Nation over the unfortunate incident that to the death and injury of many sons and daughters of Eggon.
Barr. Aliyu, who described the incident as “uncalled for”, sympathized with the families of the victims, as he called on government to find lasting solutions to the traffic situation around Eggon community.
The Executive Chairman prayed for the departed souls to find peace and comfort for the affected families, wishing the deceased peaceful rest.
