By DAVID IORJA, Abuja-
The nation is in mourning following the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, at 61.
Prominent figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have paid tribute to the football icon.
President Tinubu in a statement by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga, described Rufai as a patriotic sportsman who wrote his name in gold in Nigerian and African sports annals.
“I recall with fond memories the heroic contributions of Peter Rufai in the historic victory of the Super Eagles at the 1994 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia…
“Having started his career with Stationery Stores of Lagos in 1980, Rufai was one of the earliest footballers in Nigeria to go professional, playing in many European countries,” President Tinubu said.
Peter Obi, a passionate football fan, remembered Rufai’s legendary career, saying, “Peter Rufai’s career was extremely legendary, so much that he earned the iconic nickname ‘Dodo Mayana’.
“Rufai stood tall for Nigeria, especially during our 1994 AFCON victory and the 1994 FIFA World Cup that shook the world.”
Obi prayed for comfort for Rufai’s family, adding, “May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire generations to come.”
Atiku Abubakar in a post via his X handle on Thursday, also mourned Rufai’s passing, describing it as a “profound loss to the global football community.”
“Peter Rufai’s remarkable contributions to the beautiful game will always be remembered, and he will be sorely missed,” Atiku said, extending condolences to Rufai’s family and the Nigerian football community.
Rufai’s legacy extends beyond his playing career. He founded the Staruf Football Academy, where he mentored and nurtured young footballers.
As the nation mourns his loss, his impact on Nigerian football will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace.
