Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening democratic governance, fostering national unity, and addressing the challenges facing the country as Nigeria prepares to mark the 27th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic rule on June 12.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this on Friday during a special Juma’at prayer held as part of activities commemorating Democracy Day 2026.
According to the minister, the prayer session provided an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and seek divine guidance for continued peace, stability, and progress.
“Today, we joined millions of Nigerians in offering prayers for our nation as part of activities marking the 27th Democracy Day Celebration, which occurs on June 12, 2026,” Idris said.
He noted that national development requires not only effective leadership but also the support and active participation of citizens.
“This solemn Juma’at service reminds us that Nigeria’s progress, unity and stability require not only good governance but also the prayers, support and active participation of all citizens,” he added.
The minister paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, widely regarded as a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, describing his sacrifices as instrumental to the nation’s democratic evolution.
“As we commemorate Democracy Day, we reflect on the sacrifices of our heroes, especially Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose courage, resilience and commitment to the will of the people remain enduring symbols of Nigeria’s democratic journey,” Idris stated.
He described the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule as evidence of the resilience of democratic institutions and the determination of Nigerians to uphold constitutional governance.
“Democracy Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the strength of our democratic institutions and the collective commitment of Nigerians to constitutional rule.
“Twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic governance testify to the resilience of our democracy and the determination of our people to uphold democratic values,” he said.
The minister further emphasized that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains focused on deepening democracy, promoting national cohesion, and tackling pressing national issues.
“Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity and addressing the challenges confronting our nation,” he noted.
Calling for greater unity among Nigerians, Idris urged citizens to embrace dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and responsible citizenship as critical pillars for national development.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship. Nigeria’s strength lies in our diversity, and our future depends on our ability to work together in the interest of our nation.
“Let us continue to reject division, embrace dialogue and promote values that strengthen our democracy and foster national cohesion,” he said.
The minister expressed optimism about the country’s future, stressing that collective efforts would help build a stronger and more prosperous nation.
“Together, we can build a stronger, more prosperous and united Nigeria for present and future generations,” he added.
He concluded with prayers for the nation, its leaders, and security personnel, asking for lasting peace, unity, and prosperity across the country.
“May God Almighty continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria, guide our leaders, protect our security personnel, and grant our nation enduring peace, unity and prosperity.”
