In a heartfelt display of solidarity, Portuguese winger Pedro Neto and Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez paid tribute to the late Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva during the pre-match formalities of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final match between Palmeiras and Chelsea.
Before the game, volunteers observed a minute of silence to honor the memory of the duo, who tragically passed away in a motor accident in Spain earlier that week.
The football world was left in shock and mourning following the news of their untimely death.
During the pre-match formalities, Neto and Fernandez held up a Chelsea shirt bearing the names of Jota and André Silva, showing their respect and admiration for the late duo.
Jota, who had recently gotten married to his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, was known for his impressive skills on the field, including winning the Premier League with Liverpool and the Nations League with Portugal.
Jota was traveling back to Liverpool for pre-season training by car and ferry due to recent minor surgery that advised against flying when the tragic accident occurred.
The football community is still reeling from the loss of this talented young player and his brother.
Neto and Fernandez’s emotional tribute serves as a testament to the impact Jota and André Silva had on those around them.
Their legacy will live on, and their memory will continue to inspire future generations of footballers.
