Houses destroyed by windstorm
By SADIQ ABUBAKAR, Damaturu –
A powerful windstorm, coupled with heavy rainfall, has claimed four lives and demolished 1,637 mud houses across Yobe State since May 9.
Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), Dr. Muhammad Goje, shared this information with journalists in Damaturu on Thursday. He noted that the disaster impacted seven local government areas: Bursari, Damaturu, Fika, Fune, Gulani, Potiskum, and Tarmuwa.
The windstorm injured 92 people and affected 5,022 individuals across 1,264 households, with 83 households (368 people) displaced. Goje reported that 48 communities were hit, with Fika suffering the most severe damage.
In response, YOSEMA, in collaboration with Action Against Hunger (ACF) and supported by the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), provided critical relief supplies to 566 households in Fika and Potiskum.
A joint assessment by YOSEMA and ACF identified the most vulnerable families who lost homes, essential items, and required hygiene support.
ACF’s WASH Project Manager, Mohammed Kingimi, confirmed the organization’s commitment to further aid victims, pending available resources. ACF is also planning to implement Food Security and Livelihood (FSL) programs to support the recovery of the same 566 households.
Goje reaffirmed the Yobe State government’s dedication to safeguarding affected communities through proactive disaster response measures.
