National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has strongly denounced the violent assault of a female corps member by members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.
The victim was reportedly assaulted by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South LGA of the state.
The incident, which occurred during a purported investigation at the corps members’ lodge, sparked widespread outrage after details of the dehumanizing treatment surfaced.
In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, Ms. Caroline Embu, NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, expressed deep dismay over the incident.
“The management of NYSC is profoundly saddened by the inhumane treatment inflicted on our corps member. Such conduct by the vigilante operatives is utterly unacceptable, regardless of any claimed justification for their actions,” Embu stated.
She criticized the vigilantes’ approach during their alleged investigation at the corps members’ lodge, emphasizing that the NYSC rejects such aggressive tactics.
Embu acknowledged the public’s concern and commended the Anambra State Government for its initial response to the incident.
“We are grateful for the public’s support and the steps taken by the state government. We fully back the ongoing investigation by the Nigeria Police Force to uncover the truth and ensure justice for our corps member and any other affected parties,” she added.
To address the aftermath, Embu revealed that the NYSC has launched administrative measures to support the affected corps member. “We have put in place procedures to help her manage the psychological and physical trauma caused by this ordeal,” she said, underscoring the organization’s dedication to the safety and well-being of all corps members across the country.
Embu reaffirmed NYSC’s unwavering commitment to protecting its members, stating, “The welfare and security of our corps members remain our top priority, and we will continue to work tirelessly to uphold this responsibility.”
