Suspect posing as the “Obi of Lagos"
Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man posing as the “Obi of Lagos,” a fictitious traditional title, for orchestrating an illegal installation ceremony aimed at deceiving the public.
The suspect, along with three accomplices, was detained to prevent a breach of public peace and protect citizens from fraudulent misrepresentation.
The command’s deputy spokesperson, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, announced the arrests in a statement released on Wednesday in Lagos.

“The primary suspect, a 65-year-old from Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, was apprehended alongside three co-conspirators aged 41, 51, and 65,” Oluseyi disclosed.
According to police intelligence, the group had planned to unveil a so-called “Palace of Obi of Lagos State,” valued at N1.5 billion, on Saturday at Apple Hall in Amuwo Odofin.
“Upon receiving this information, the police swiftly sealed off the venue to prevent any disturbance and safeguard the public from being misled,” Oluseyi explained.
To ensure the event was halted, the command deployed a robust force, including conventional police units, Eko Strike Force teams, and other tactical squads, to secure the location and maintain public order.
The suspects are currently in custody, and an investigation into their illicit activities is underway.
“The results of the investigation will be shared with the public, and the suspects will face appropriate charges in court,” Oluseyi stated.
Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh issued a stern warning to the public about impostors
exploiting revered cultural institutions.
“CP Jimoh urges citizens to stay vigilant against fraudsters and criminal elements who misuse traditional titles for personal gain,” Oluseyi relayed.
He further emphasized that such actions are illegal, violate Lagos State laws, and threaten societal peace.
Oluseyi reaffirmed the command’s commitment to upholding the law decisively, stating, “The Lagos State Police Command will take firm action against any individual or group whose activities undermine legality, public safety, or the integrity of the state.”
