Super Eagles star Akor Adams pays tribute to first Prime Minister of DR Congo, late Patrice Lumumba after scoring against Algeria
Nigerian Super Eagles forward Akor Adams has earned widespread praise for a powerful show of sportsmanship and solidarity after paying tribute to Congolese independence hero Patrice Lumumba during Nigeria’s clash with Algeria in AFCON quarter finals match.
Adams’ tribute came against the backdrop of recent controversy involving Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Algeria had earlier knocked DR Congo out of the tournament, a match that drew attention after Algerian player Mohamed Amoura was seen teasing a Congolese supporter, Kuka Muladinga, who had been standing in honour of Patrice Lumumba throughout the competition.
Lumumba, a revered symbol of African liberation and Congo’s first prime minister, remains an enduring figure of resistance and dignity across the continent.

While the incident sparked backlash online, Amoura later issued an apology for his actions. Against that backdrop, Akor Adams’ gesture was widely viewed as a meaningful response—one rooted in respect, unity and African solidarity.
After scoring against Algeria, the Nigerian striker paid tribute to Lumumba, drawing applause from fans and commentators who hailed the act as a reminder that football can transcend rivalry and politics.

Many supporters described Adams’ action as “pure class,” praising him for using football’s global platform to honour African history and stand in solidarity with Congolese fans.
The moment added emotional weight to Nigeria’s encounter with Algeria and reinforced the growing reputation of Akor Adams—not just as a goalscorer, but as a player who understands the deeper impact of the game beyond the pitch.
