Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani
Kaduna State has emerged as one of Nigeria’s leading states in promoting transparency at the local government level, following its recognition in a new report by BudgIT.
The report, titled “ _The Missing Tier: Mapping Local Government Budget Transparency in Nigeria,”_ lists Kaduna among only 10 states where local government (LGA) budget information is publicly accessible highlighting the state’s strides in deepening accountability and openness at the grassroots.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, described the recognition as a strong endorsement of the governance approach of Governor Uba Sani.
He said the report reflects the administration’s commitment to promoting transparency across all tiers of government, noting that making local government finances more accessible strengthens public trust and encourages citizen participation.
According to him, the state government’s deliberate support for functional local government autonomy is aimed at bringing governance closer to the people and enhancing service delivery.
The BudgIT report specifically noted that Kaduna provides medium-term consolidated LGA budget data, enabling citizens and stakeholders to track how public resources are planned and allocated across local councils.
While the report commended a handful of states for progress in budget openness, it painted a broader picture of uneven performance nationwide, with many states still lacking accessible LGA budget documents thereby weakening accountability at the grassroots.
BudgIT emphasised that transparency in budget processes remains critical to improving public understanding of government priorities, strengthening oversight, and fostering trust between citizens and institutions.
Although Kaduna’s inclusion signals notable progress, the organisation stressed the need for greater consistency, depth, and timeliness in budget data publication across all states.
The recognition, therefore, marks a significant milestone for Kaduna, even as it underscores the need to sustain reforms and deepen transparency in local government administration.
