Sokoto State Police Command has thwarted a suspected bandit attack on Daraye Village in Wamakko Local Government Area, killing one of the attackers and recovering an AK-47 rifle with live ammunition.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, the operation was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to combat banditry and improve security across the state.
Rufa’i said the police received a distress call reporting that a large group of heavily armed bandits had stormed Daraye Village. In response, operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Village Crime Reduction Unit (VCRU), and other tactical teams were immediately deployed to support officers at the Wamakko Divisional Police Headquarters.
The security personnel confronted the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire, forcing the bandits to retreat into a nearby forest after sustaining varying degrees of gunshot injuries.
Following the operation, police conducted a thorough search of the area, during which one suspected bandit was found dead. Officers also recovered an AK-47 rifle and a magazine containing 28 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.
The Command said confidence-building patrols have since been intensified around Daraye and adjoining communities, while nearby divisional police formations have been placed on high alert to intercept any fleeing suspects who may attempt to seek medical attention.
Commending the officers involved, the Commissioner of Police in Sokoto State, Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, praised their bravery and professionalism during the operation. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustaining the fight against banditry and ensuring the safety of residents across the state.
Police also urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing security operations.
