COVID-19: Police break up funeral in Germany with 400 mourners

A funeral with around 400 mourners was broken up in the northern German city of Bremen for flouting coronavirus rules, police said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The permitted number for events was exceeded considerably,’’ a police spokeswoman said of the incident, which occurred on Monday.

Police officers called on the head of the family to call the whole thing off, after which the mourners gradually left the cemetery.

A police report has been filed documenting violations of contact restrictions and hygiene rules such as mask wearing, with charges pending.

In a statement, police appealed to the public for discipline during the pandemic: “Do not put yourself or police forces in danger.’’
