Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is reeling from the devastating loss of four staff members in a fire that broke out on Tuesday at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos.
The incident, which has plunged the entire FIRS community into mourning, occurred at the building where FIRS occupies the sixth and seventh floors, housing the Medium Tax Audit and Onikan Emerging Tax Office.
According to a statement from FIRS, “Upon being alerted, our Security and Safety officials swiftly mobilized and contacted the fire service, but by the time emergency responders arrived, thick smoke had already engulfed the building.”
Despite the rapid response, the tragedy claimed the lives of four dedicated employees.
FIRS management expressed profound grief, stating, “The unfortunate incident has thrown the entire FIRS community into mourning.”
They extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, honoring the fallen colleagues for their “professionalism and dedication [that] were exemplary.”
In response to the tragedy, FIRS has committed to supporting the affected families, pledging to “provide every necessary support during this difficult time.”
The agency is also taking proactive steps to prevent future incidents, announcing that it is “reviewing and strengthening safety measures across all FIRS offices nationwide, both rented and owned, to ensure the safety of our people remains paramount.”
The FIRS community continues to grieve, while its leadership emphasizes solidarity and a renewed focus on workplace safety to honor the memory of their departed colleagues.
