Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over what he described as a troubling absence of genuine loyalty among Nigeria’s political elite, warning that self-interest has continued to undermine national progress.
Obi made the remarks on Tuesday in Abuja while attending the book launch of “The Loyalist” by the spokesperson of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Bolaji Abdullahi.
Reflecting on the theme of the book, Obi said the question of loyalty remains central to Nigeria’s political and governance challenges.

“The subject of loyalty in Nigeria is of utmost importance. We live in a nation where many elites in leadership positions demonstrate little to no loyalty to the country, its Constitution, its unity, its progress, or the welfare of its citizens.”
According to him, loyalty among some leaders has been redirected away from national interest toward personal gain and the misuse of public resources, a trend he described as deeply unsettling.
“Instead, their loyalty often lies with self-interest and the reckless looting of public resources.”
Obi lamented that individuals who insist on constitutionalism, accountability, and people-centred governance often face hostility rather than encouragement within the political system.
“It is disheartening that those who choose to uphold loyalty to the Constitution, advocate for good governance, and prioritise the well-being of the people are frequently marginalised, victimised, or ostracised.”
He further noted that Nigeria’s political environment has been shaped by a distorted understanding of loyalty, one that favours personal allegiance over national responsibility.
“Our political landscape is marked by a selfish interpretation of loyalty, rather than genuine loyalty to the nation.”

Commending the author, Obi praised Hon. Abdullahi for addressing the issue through literature, describing the book as timely and relevant to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“I commend Hon. Bolaji Abdullahi for this work.”
Reaffirming his personal stance, Obi said he remains unwavering in his commitment to Nigeria’s unity, constitutional order, and the welfare of its citizens.
“I remain firmly committed to the unity of Nigeria, respect for the Constitution, the rule of law, and the welfare of our citizens.”
He concluded on an optimistic note, expressing confidence that meaningful national transformation is possible.
“A new Nigeria is not just a dream; it is absolutely achievable.”
