Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani on Tuesday received five awards from health sector unions in recognition of his administration’s efforts to revitalise healthcare delivery and improve the welfare of health workers in the state.
The awards were presented during the commissioning of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board headquarters, where the governor also flagged off the distribution of medical equipment and ambulances to Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities across the state.
The unions that honoured the governor include the Kaduna State Council of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, the Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria, the National Association of Community Health Practitioners of Nigeria, and the Association of Medical Laboratory Technicians and Assistants of Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, Governor Uba Sani highlighted key achievements of his administration in the health sector over the last two and a half years, noting that his government had upgraded and revitalised 255 Primary Healthcare Centres to Level-2 status — the highest number recorded by any state in the country.
He said the government had also established 23 PHC Centres of Excellence, one in each local government area, to provide advanced care, serve as referral hubs and strengthen health data generation.
According to the governor, 120 neonatal corners have been established across the state, leading to a significant reduction in neonatal morbidity and mortality, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
He added that three oxygen plants with a robust carrier system had been procured to support emergency response and reduce deaths associated with critical cases, while 19 general hospitals had been renovated to strengthen secondary healthcare services.
Governor Uba Sani further disclosed that the Kaduna State Health Supplies Management Agency (KADHSMA) warehouse had been upgraded to a pharma-grade facility with a 1,600 square metre storage capacity, ensuring uninterrupted availability of essential medicines.
On workers’ welfare, the governor said the state had commenced payment of the full 2024 CONMESS and CONHESS salary scales and cleared all promotion backlogs in the health sector.
He explained that the distribution of modern medical equipment and ambulances, which commenced on Tuesday, marked the second tranche of such interventions by his administration, aimed at improving service delivery, emergency response and referral systems across the state.
“No mother should lose her life while giving birth, and no child should die from preventable causes because essential equipment or timely transportation is unavailable,” he said.
Governor Uba Sani also described the newly commissioned Primary Health Care Board headquarters as the largest of its kind in the country, noting that it would serve as the nerve centre for health sector reforms, performance monitoring and effective service delivery across wards.
While welcoming 1,800 newly recruited health workers, he said they constituted the first batch in an annual recruitment exercise to be sustained over the next five years, stressing that human resources remain the backbone of healthcare delivery.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening primary healthcare as the foundation for achieving Universal Health Coverage in Kaduna State.
