National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has named Senator Nenadi Usman as its Interim National Chairperson and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as Interim National Secretary, alongside other members of the newly formed interim working committee.
The appointments were made during a pivotal NEC meeting held in Abuja on Friday.
The interim committee is tasked with managing the party’s operations until the upcoming national convention, where a new NEC will be elected.
The meeting also approved timelines for ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses, as well as the national convention.
The Labour Party’s National Secretariat has been directed to release guidelines to ensure a transparent and democratic electoral process across all levels.
The gathering saw the presence of notable figures, including Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, the party’s sole governor. Ajaero emphasized the Labour Party’s role as a platform for the common man, encouraging members to remain steadfast despite internal challenges.
“Those claiming leadership outside the collective will of the Labour movement are merely dreaming,” he remarked, urging unity and focus.
Governor Otti echoed this sentiment, stressing the need to restructure and rebrand the party for greater effectiveness.
“The Labour Party remains strong, and we are committed to its growth.
“The NLC laid its foundation, but the party has grown beyond it,” Otti said. He called on members to stay united and work diligently to strengthen the party.
The NEC meeting was convened in response to a Supreme Court ruling affirming Nenadi Usman’s position as national chairperson. Otti urged the faction led by Julius Abure to respect the court’s decision and embrace humility.
“As law-abiding citizens, we are formalizing key structures, including the interim working committee, to guide the party until the next convention,” he stated.
Otti also expressed gratitude to the NLC for its foundational role while encouraging members to remain focused and collaborative in their efforts to advance the Labour Party’s mission.
