Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has promoted 1,500 employees, clearing a decade-long backlog of stagnated promotions.
The Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, said the move was part of the authority’s strategy to develop its human capital and improve staff.
“The only way we can meet and indeed exceed stakeholders’ expectations is to deepen the competencies of our human resources assets and boost their morale”, Dantsoho was quoted as saying in a statement by the General Manager Corporate & Strategic Communications of NPA, Mr Ikechukwu Onyemekara.
He commended the Minister of Marine & Blue Economy, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, for approving the promotion exercise.
The NPA boss emphasized that talent development was critical to the authority’s success, particularly in the area of port competitiveness.
“Talent development constitutes a critical success factor for the actualization of the audacious goals we have set for ourselves, especially in the area of port competitiveness.”
The Maritime Workers Union (MWUN) and the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies (SSASGOC) have also commended the NPA management for clearing the backlog of promotions.
The President of SSASGOC, Comrade Akinola Bodunde, appreciated the NPA management for increasing productivity bonuses and providing end-of-year welfare packages for staff.
The promotion exercise is expected to boost staff morale and productivity, and is part of the NPA’s efforts to improve its human capital development and ports infrastructure.
As Dantsoho noted, “Ports infrastructure and equipment modernisation drive would go hand in hand with continuous staff welfare improvement.”
