Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) has commenced enforcement of road taxes, urging motorists to be law abiding by validating their old number plates, register their vehicles properly and renew other expired particulars as and when due.

According to a statement made available to NATIONAL ACCORD on Tuesday, it stated that during the exercise, which was a joint effort with the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Commission and Vehicle Inspection Services, the OGIRS’ Director of Other Taxes, Mrs Olubisi Ajomale said the move is not only for revenue generation but to ensure safety of road users, explaining that vehicle particulars were means of identifying original vehicle owners.

She noted that the enforcement, in line with the provision of the Nigeria Tax Law, started in Abeokuta zone and would be carried out in other zones within the stipulated period of two weeks.

Also, Head of Operations, Vehicle Inspection Services, Engr. Abimbola Babalola, noted that most motorists were not ready to voluntarily comply with payment of road taxes, until they are compelled.

He pointed out that revenue generated from road taxes is part of fund being used in construction and maintenance of roads.
