Former Vice President Peter Obi has commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his leadership and commitment to public service during the 50th anniversary thanksgiving of Oyo State, held at the Cathedral of St Peter Anglican Church, Aremo, Ibadan.
In a post on his X handle, Obi reflected on his long-standing relationship with Governor Makinde, recalling the governor’s invitation to the maiden Executive Council (EXCO) retreat at the start of his administration. Obi praised Makinde for his consistency and impact across the state:

“Beyond the visible infrastructure across the state, his performance is widely discussed and appreciated by Oyo people wherever they are,” Obi wrote.
He also commended the governor for his address at the thanksgiving service, highlighting Makinde’s focus on building strong institutions and strengthening teams rather than relying on individuals. According to Obi, this approach demonstrates a statesmanlike vision that ensures the progress of Oyo State is sustainable beyond any single administration.

Obi further lauded The Right Reverend Williams Oluwarotimi Aladekugbe, Bishop of Ibadan North, for delivering a sermon he described as “timely and profound, reminding us that thanksgiving is not merely a ritual but a moral discipline that nurtures humility, responsibility, and service to the common good.”

He concluded by urging the people of Oyo State to support Governor Makinde and pray for guidance for leaders in positions of authority:
“Finally, I call on the people of Oyo State to continue to support the Governor and to pray that God will guide those in authority to work for the common good of the state and its people. A new Nigeria is possible.”
The thanksgiving service marked half a century since the creation of Oyo State, providing an opportunity for reflection on the state’s achievements, leadership, and future prospects.
