Ahead of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) elective National Convention in Ibadan, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has called on party members to think beyond routine and infuse the event with energy, innovation, and genuine cultural representation.
Speaking during the inaugural meeting of the Entertainment/Welfare Sub-Committee, which she chairs, Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasized that the upcoming convention should reflect the rich diversity of Nigeria while appealing to a new generation of voters.
“Our role isn’t just about feeding delegates,” she said in Abuja. “We must design a convention experience that resonates far beyond the venue—through television screens and digital platforms—to reach Nigerians everywhere.”
She urged the committee to prioritize inclusivity, ensuring that all regions and cultures are represented in the festivities. According to her, the hosting state, Oyo, has a unique opportunity to showcase its cultural heritage as a symbol of unity and pride.
> “We must ensure that our entertainment cuts across the cultures of our dear country. We must make sure that no region is left out of representing and participating in the cultural festivities,” she said.
“We would expect intentional contributions, like we said, respect for all tribes and respect for all religions. The very best of Nigeria should be put to the fore.”
Senator Natasha, who represents Kogi Central, noted that entertainment is a strategic tool for political engagement and growth. She believes the convention should be a platform to attract new members, particularly disillusioned individuals from other parties and young Nigerians who have recently become eligible voters.
> “There are many Nigerians who have turned the age of 18 since the last convention… they are searching for a party upon which they can entrust their political future,” she said.
“So we must present our activities such that we will be the admired party for the youth.”
As part of her committee’s strategy, Akpoti-Uduaghan announced plans to initiate a pre-convention cultural challenge in various states, encouraging grassroots participation in the convention’s entertainment segment.
> “On Friday today, as the chairperson of this committee, I will take it upon myself to put out a challenge for musical participation from my state and probably the best will win an award of a cash token and also a chance to participate,” she said.
Backing her remarks, the PDP National Women Leader, Dr. Amina Bryhm—who also serves as the secretary of the sub-committee—said preparations for the convention were already in advanced stages.
> “You can see I am already wearing the uniform for the convention. So, we are not joking,” Bryhm told journalists.
“All the committees are up and running. We are just doing finishing touches to all the caterers, all the artists that will be part of the event and we hope to organise a memorable convention.”
Both leaders expressed confidence that this year’s convention would not only reflect PDP’s organisational strength but also its readiness to welcome new faces and voices into its fold.
