President Bola Tinubu on Thursday led a session of the National Council of State, joined virtually by former Heads of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) and Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd).
The hybrid meeting, held inside the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, began promptly at 1:29 p.m., according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The Council of State is composed of all living former Presidents and Heads of State, the Vice President, serving and retired Chief Justices of the Supreme Court, among other high-ranking officials.
This session marks President Tinubu’s second time presiding over the Council since taking office, with the first meeting held in August 2024.
Among those physically present were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.
Also in attendance were National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, several sitting governors, and past Chief Justices including Muhammad Tanko, Mohammed Alfa Belgore, Walter Onnoghen, and Kayode Ariwoola.
Top on the agenda for the meeting were discussions around national security and strategic preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
