81 Division of the Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of one of its soldiers who was fatally attacked by a mentally unstable man in the Imota axis of Ikorodu, Lagos.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Division’s spokesperson, Lt.-Col. Musa Yahaya, explained that the tragic incident took place on November 16.
According to him, the soldier had stepped in to calm an ongoing disturbance when the assailant suddenly turned on him.
Yahaya said the attacker struck the soldier on the head with a large wooden log, leaving him with critical injuries.
“Other soldiers at the scene quickly intervened, neutralised the attacker and recovered the soldier’s weapon,” he stated.
“The wounded soldier was immediately evacuated to the Ikorodu General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.”
He added that the fallen soldier has since been laid to rest in line with Islamic burial rites, with the Acting Commanding Officer and several officers present to pay their last respects.
According to Yahaya, “The 81 Division extended its condolences to the soldier’s family, friends and colleagues, praying for the repose of his soul and acknowledging his service to the nation.”
The Army has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack. Yahaya urged the public to remain vigilant and report unusual or suspicious behaviour to security agencies without delay.
He also appealed for responsible and sensitive reporting as the inquiry continues.
