Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a soldier, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, who allegedly killed his wife and then took his own life at Wawa Cantonment in Niger State.
The incident occurred on October 11 at the Corporals and Below Quarters within the military facility.
This was disclosed in a statement on Monday by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin.
According to him, preliminary findings revealed that the soldier was on duty but had been granted permission to leave his post before the bodies were discovered.
“The remains of the deceased have been preserved while investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement read.
The Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, has directed a full investigation into the matter and assured that the outcome will be made public.
The Army expressed regret over the development and extended condolences to the families involved, adding that measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence.
The incident comes just days after soldiers were reported to have shot and killed a police officer in Bauchi State, raising fresh concerns over conduct within the military.
A full-scale investigation has been launched into the unfortunate incident involving the death of Police Constable Ukasha Muhammed, who was shot by a serving soldier during a routine patrol in Bauchi State.
The suspects (the soldier and his colleague) have been arrested and will face justice upon completion of the investigation. The police command assures the public that due process will be followed, and the suspects will be charged to court accordingly.
