Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo has announced the reopening of the Onitsha Main Market, following the expiration of the closure order earlier imposed by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, PhD, the government confirmed that trading activities will resume fully on Monday, February 2, 2026.
“This is to inform the general public that the closure of Onitsha Main Market, ordered by Mr. Governor, Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR lapses this weekend.”
The commissioner added that all traders are expected to return to their shops without fear, stressing that the sit-at-home directive previously observed on Mondays is no longer in effect across the state.
“To that effect, all traders are hereby informed to resume business as usual on Monday, February 2, 2026, as there is no longer any form of sit-at-home on Mondays in Anambra State.”
The market had earlier been shut down on the directive of the governor after traders complied with the Monday sit-at-home order in solidarity with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently convicted and imprisoned.
Reassuring residents, the state government said adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of lives and property.
“Ndị Anambra and residents are assured of adequate security and encouraged to report any security concerns to 5111.”
The government also issued reminders to public sector workers, teachers, and parents on compliance with existing directives.
“Meanwhile, civil servants and teachers are reminded that pro rata salary system remains in force: no work on Monday, no pay.”
“Also, parents must release their children for school on Mondays to avoid sanctions.”
