President Bola Tinubu has officially signed the Nigeria Police Training Institutions Establishment Bill, 2024 into law, granting formal recognition to 48 police training institutions nationwide.
Sponsored by Senator Ahmed Malam-Madori (APC–Jigawa North East), the legislation is designed to institutionalize police education, enhance professional development, and integrate global best practices into Nigerian law enforcement.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the law classifies police training facilities into five key categories spread over the country’s six geopolitical zones: Police Colleges, Police Training Schools, Police Tactical Schools, Police Technical Training Schools, and specialized institutions.
Notable among the newly sanctioned Police Colleges are facilities in Ikeja (Lagos), Kaduna, Maiduguri, Oji River (Enugu), Jos, and the Police Detective College in Enugu.
Police Training Schools have also been established in strategic locations including Bauchi, Minna, Sokoto, Benin, Calabar, Ibadan, Jos, Owerri, and several other centers aimed at strengthening grassroots training efforts.
The law further empowers Police Tactical Schools to provide advanced operational training to elite units such as the Mobile Police and Counter-Terrorism forces. These include training centers in Gwoza (Borno), Ila-Orangun (Osun), Ende-Hill (Nasarawa), Nonwa-Tai (Rivers), and Gombe, among others.
Specialized tactical schools like the SPU School in Kafin Hausa (Jigawa), K9 School in Bukuru-Jos, and the Mounted Troop School in Jos are also officially recognized under the new law.
Additional institutions covered include the Marine Training School in Toru-Orua (Bayelsa), the Police Pre-Retirement Training School in Kudan (Kaduna), and technical training centers such as the Police Public Relations School in Lafia and Abuja.
Other notable facilities incorporated into the framework are the Central Planning and Training Unit (Jos), Police School of Intelligence (Shere, Kwara), and the Schools of Communication in Kudan and Ikeja, alongside the Police School of Music, Police Driving School, and the Veterinary Training School in Abuja.
Senator Malam-Madori hailed the Presidential assent as a transformative step, emphasizing that “The Act will professionalise police training, deepen research in security management, and align Nigeria’s policing culture with international law enforcement standards.”
This landmark law signals a new era in Nigeria’s internal security architecture, strengthening the foundations for a more skilled and accountable police force. (NAN)
