Troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA successfully thwarted a deadly bandit attack late Sunday night in Sabon Garin Kwargaba, Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, neutralising several of the assailants in the process.
According to local sources, the confrontation unfolded around 11:30 p.m. on October 7, when a large group of armed bandits stormed the village, firing indiscriminately and causing panic among residents.
Soldiers stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) nearby were immediately deployed to the area and engaged the attackers in a prolonged gun duel.
> “Several of the bandits were neutralised while others escaped with gunshot injuries. Unfortunately, one soldier and a woman from the community lost their lives in the encounter,” a source confirmed.
Another soldier who sustained injuries was evacuated to Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto, where he is reportedly responding well to treatment.
To bolster security in the aftermath of the attack, additional military reinforcements have been dispatched to the region.
> “An extensive bush combing operation is ongoing to track down the fleeing bandits and ensure lasting security in the area,” the source added.
The swift response by the troops is being hailed locally as a crucial step in deterring further assaults and maintaining stability in the region, which has seen repeated incursions by criminal groups.
