Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has announced a comprehensive overhaul of Kaduna State’s transportation sector, anchored on a N30 billion counterpart funding for the Kaduna Bus Rapid Transit (KBRT) project, a joint initiative between the state government and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
Speaking at the 7th National Transport Conference, the Governor described the KBRT as a historic project, the first of its kind in Northern Nigeria and second nationwide after Lagos.
The 24-kilometre dedicated corridor will run from Rigachikun to Sabon Tasha, deploying 120 CNG-powered articulated buses expected to cut carbon emissions by 38% and save commuters about N1.8 billion annually in fuel costs.
Governor Sani said the project will create over 3,200 direct and 11,000 indirect jobs across various sectors, including ICT, maintenance, and security. He added that the proposed Kaduna Light Rail Project, now at an advanced stage, will complement the KBRT by linking key urban centres, with Phase 1 covering Rigachikun to Sabon Tasha and Phase 2 connecting Millennium City to the Rigasa rail corridor.
The Governor highlighted his administration’s Subsidized Transport Scheme, under which 100 brand-new CNG/hybrid buses commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June—offer free rides for students, workers, and retirees. “This initiative has saved commuters over N500 million since July 2025,” he noted.
To enhance safety and efficiency, he disclosed that over 200 modern bus stops are being constructed across the state, while additional phases will ensure comprehensive coverage.
Governor Sani also cited progress on key infrastructure, including the 75%-completed Modern Interstate Bus Terminal at Kakuri, which consolidates illegal motor parks and boosts revenue, and the Sobawa Motor Park, set to replace the old Kawo terminal to decongest city traffic.
He further revealed plans for a world-class motor park at Millennium City, integrated into the Federal Government’s revived Eastern By-Pass project, as part of the state’s urban renewal drive.
In partnership with private investors, the state is also upgrading and digitalizing trailer parks at Tafa and Maraban Jos, designed to accommodate 500 trucks each. The initiative, he said, aims to enhance safety, curb roadside parking, and generate more revenue.
On the revitalization of Kaduna Line, the Governor said his administration cleared inherited debts of over N70 million and introduced an e-ticketing system, staff retraining, and harmonization of motor parks.
“We have restored operational efficiency and renewed collaboration with sister transport companies to ensure Kaduna Line thrives again,” he affirmed.
