Alia inaugurates BSIEC, charges them to conduct free, fair and credible LG elections

The Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Iormem Alia has inaugurated the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) with a charge to conduct free, fair and credible local government elections in the state.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony at Government House Makurdi on Thursday, the Governor, who performed the ceremony, described it as a significant mile stone at the grassroots and promised not to interfere in the activities of BSIEC to enable them conduct an all inclusive and transparent elections at the local government level.

The governor insisted that: “You have been selected based on your non partisan parlance, your outstanding qualifications, integrity and unwavering commitment to democratic principles which are the core principles required for the survival of our thriving democracy all of you been proven to be of no questionable integrity.”

Alia told members of the commission that they were entrusted with the responsibility to ensure the consolidation of democracy at the third tier of government and “should conduct a free,fair and credible election”

The Governor noted that if the commission performs it function properly it would reflect the yearnings and aspirations of Benue people who have anxiously desired that their voices were heard through their votes.

The governor vowed to support the commission to conduct credible elections that would be acceptable by all no matter the challenges.

He congratulated the appointees on their well deserved appointments and called on well meaning citizens of the state to join hands with BSIEC to ensure success of the democratic process at the third tier of government.

In his response on behalf of other members, Chairman of BSIEC Dr. John Chen, informed they accepted the appointments with the deepest sense of humility and assured that the trust the governor found in them would never be abused even as he promised not to disappoint the Benue community having understood their yearnings and aspirations.
