Two students of the Bauchi State University, Gadau and four others have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a 23-year old student of the university.
The syndicate also snatched a Toyota Camry 2010 model with which they used in taking their victim away.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Command, Ahmed Wakil, said this in a statement made available to journalists in the State on Tuesday.
However, luck ran out of them when they got to a military checkpoint mounted by operatives of 133 Special Forces Battalion Battalion based in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi state, they were promptly arrested.
Meanwhile, one of the suspects while trying to escape suddenly slumped and was rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Azare where he was certified dead by a medical doctor.
Wakil, a Superintendent of Police, said that two other suspects were handed over to the Command by troops of the Special Forces Battalion.
“Based on inter-agency collaboration towards complimenting constitutional mandates of the Police as a leading Agency in maintaining the internal security, six suspects were handed over to the command by operatives attached to the 133 SF Battalion based in Azare, Bauchi state.
“The suspects kidnapped one Ojo Tobi David, male (23), a 400 Level student of SLT Bauchi State University, Gadau, from Federal Low Cost of Azare town, Bauchi State.
“After kidnapping the victim, the suspects snatched a Toyota Camry 2010 with Reg No.KYW-925-SB belonging to one Amaechi Ikechukwu of the same address which was forcefully collected and took their victim inside swiftly heading to Misau Road Azare.
“On receipt of the distress call, the soldiers stationed at Azare/Misau military checkpoint responded immediately and intercepted the stolen vehicle alongside the suspects, meanwhile, the victim was rescued unhurt.
“However, one of the suspects, Damilola James of the Turum area of Bauchi, fell while trying to escape. He was taken to Federal Medical Center, Azare for immediate medical attention but was certified dead by a medical doctor,” he said.
He said that preliminary investigation at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Azare, indicated that the crux of the matter was a result of a misunderstanding over the sharing of $3,800 obtained in a Yahoo transaction.
The Police Spokesman said that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Bauchi, for further investigation.
Meanwhile, he said all the suspects are males and gave their names as: Hassan Mohammed (27), of Chilankori Azare town; Abdul Karim Gobir (21), a 300 level student of Human Physiology, BASUG; Ibrahim Yusuf (23), a 400 level student of physiology BASUG; Peter Femi (28), of Turum area Bauchi and Samuel Abimbola (23), of Turum area Bauchi.
According to him, four iphones, four Android Phones, one Tecno keypad phone, one power bank, two chargers, one FCMB Bank ATM card, one Zenith Bank ATM card, two bunch of keys, three vehicle tickets, three bags, assorted charms and a Toyota camry with reg no. KYW 925 SB, were recovered from the suspects.
Similarly, the PPRO said that operatives attached to the Command have arrested Suleiman Samaila, male (32), a student of Bauchi State University, Itas Gadau Campus for causing grievous hurt to a fellow student.
He said that report available to the Command revealed that on June 10, 2023 at about 5.15pm, a misunderstanding ensued among the students of Bauchi State University, Itas Gadau campus during a friendly football match at the off-campus football pitch.
Wakil said: “In the event, one Safiyanu Adam Musa, male (23), a 200-level bio-chemistry student of the same institution was attacked by the said Suleiman Samaila. As a result, the victim sustained a serious injury on his left hand.
“Upon receipt of the report, a team of policemen visited the scene and conveyed the victim to the Federal Medical Centre, Azare for medical attention. The victim is recuperating from the deep cut sustained during the incident,” he said.
He said that the arrested suspect has confessed to his crime and would be charged in court for the established offenses upon completion of the discreet investigation.
