An evening meant for celebration turned into tragedy on Sunday after two gunmen opened fire on a crowd gathered for a Jewish Hanukkah event at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach in Australia, killing 11 people and injuring dozens more in what authorities described as a terrorist attack.
The shooting unfolded during the annual “Hanukkah by the Sea” celebration, which police said drew more than 1,000 attendees to one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations. New South Wales Police confirmed that at least 29 injured people were rushed to nearby hospitals as emergency services flooded the area.
One of the suspected attackers was shot dead at the scene, while the second was left in critical condition. Police also revealed they discovered suspected improvised explosive devices inside a vehicle believed to be linked to the deceased suspect.
Despite the horror, acts of bravery stood out. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to members of the public who intervened during the chaos, describing them as “heroes” for tackling and disarming one of the attackers.
“This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, a celebration of faith — an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation,” Albanese said.
“An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian,” he added.
Police formally declared the shooting a “terrorist incident”, underscoring the gravity of the assault and its apparent targeting of the Jewish community.
Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of panic as gunfire rang out across the beach. “We heard the shots. It was shocking, it felt like 10 minutes of just bang, bang, bang. It seemed like a powerful weapon,” said Camilo Diaz, a 25-year-old student from Chile, who was at the scene.
Emergency services said they first received reports of shots fired at 6:47 pm (0747 GMT), prompting a swift and massive response.
International condemnation followed swiftly. Israeli President Isaac Herzog described the incident as a “cruel attack on Jews” and urged Australian authorities to intensify efforts against antisemitism. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also reacted strongly, accusing Australia’s government of fuelling anti-Jewish sentiment in the period leading up to the attack.
As investigations continue, Australia is left grieving the lives lost, while also reflecting on the courage shown by ordinary citizens who acted in extraordinary circumstances during one of the nation’s darkest moments.
