A capsized boat
In a harrowing boat accident in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that 26 individuals were rescued, while efforts continue to locate 25 missing passengers.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, involved a boat carrying 51 passengers, goods, and motorcycles that capsized due to strong winds and overloading.
Head of NEMA’s Sokoto Operations Office, Aliyu Kafindangi, shared details with journalists on Monday while overseeing the rescue mission.
“The operation is ongoing, and we’ve engaged neighboring communities to aid in the search for the remaining victims,” Kafindangi stated, noting that seven motorcycles were also recovered from the water.
Muhammad Bala, Area Manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), confirmed that the boat involved has been impounded.
He attributed the tragedy to overloading and adverse weather conditions, urging boat operators to prioritize safety.
“The safety of passengers must always come first. Overloading and neglecting basic safety measures endanger lives,” Bala emphasized.
The rescue efforts involve a collaborative response from NEMA, NIWA, the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), local government officials, community leaders, including the Sarkin Ruwa of Kojiyo and Goronyo, and local divers.
As the search continues, authorities are racing against time to find the missing passengers and prevent further loss of life.
Bala called for stricter adherence to safety protocols among boat and canoe operators, stressing the need for increased vigilance to avert future tragedies.
The incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in Nigeria’s waterways to protect vulnerable passengers. (NAN)
