Gunmen
By TYAV SAM TYAV, Makurdi –
Four members of the Benue State House of Assembly on the late hours of Wednesday escaped death after their convoy was attacked by blood thirsty gunmen suspected to be herdsmen.
The legislators were Samuel Jiji of Logo state constituency, Cephas Dyako of Konshisha state constituency, Saater Tiseer, Majority leader, Mbagwa state constituency and Peter Ipusu, Majority Chief Whip, Mata state constituency.
The lawmakers were returning from official assignment from Katsina Ala where they attended public hearing of some bills including the Benue State Public Protection Guards’ bill.
Our correspondent gathered that the affected lawmakers got to Tyomu, a suburb of Makurdi where the herdsmen who had allegedly laid ambush, opened fire on them as they rained live bullets on their vehicles.
No death was recorded but the trauma was unbearable to them.
Those that commented on the attack on the lawmakers wondered why the attackers came to the heart of Makurdi to attack their victims.
The immediate past Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Dr. Augustine Akpen Leva who spoke to NATIONAL ACCORD expressed worry that if the lawmakers could be attacked with ease then the ordinary Benue man could be dealt with unhurt.
Efforts to confirm the incident from the Benue State Police Command proved abortive as the Command’s spokesperson Sewuese Catherine Anene failed to respond to messages sent to her.
